HISTORY: Cassie's TSC wikia page
PERSONALITY: Cassie is strong willed and independent, frequently living alone after her mother's death and her grandmother's descent into senility. She also describes herself as someone who is used to being alone-- something of a loner, not used to being popular or social. However, as comfortable as she is with being independent, sometimes she is still just a frightened teenager at heart. After all, it's partly because she wants so desperately to have an older and wiser figure to rely upon back in her life again that she eventually relents and lets her no-good-father back into her life, despite so many cautionary warnings not to. Thankfully, she's also sensible enough that she's not afraid to ask for help or rely on others when she realises she needs it. Problems only arise when she doesn't realise it-- and when that happens, she can sometimes be stubborn and make snap judgments... that she's then prideful enough to stick to. One way or another though, she is smart enough and empathetic enough that when the error of her ways is made obvious, she will eventually admit to it.
One often gets the feeling that as much as Cassie says she doesn't mind being alone, she actually craves love and friendship. When she does make friends, she's extremely sincere, loyal and caring. (When she falls in love with her new friend's boyfriend and he seems to return the sentiment, Cassie goes to extreme lengths to push him away despite her feelings out of loyalty to said friend. However, Cassie doesn't always make the smartest decisions, so of course they eventually hook up anyway.)
Cassie is not always blessed with the best temperament-- actually, she's highly emotional. She can be volatile and impatient-- something she's very aware of and tries her best to curb, but doesn't always succeed. However, thankfully her emotional side is balanced out by the fact that her empathy levels are also relatively high. In fact, Cassie could be described as having a "helper" personality; she always wants to try to fix things where she perceives a problem. And often this is a good thing! However... on the flip side, it also sometimes means she's a little bit nosy and fixated on other people's business. The other downside to this "drop everything for my friends" attitude is that she also often expects the same in return from said friends when it's about her problems. She takes her own problems just as seriously as she takes anyone else's, and this has the unfortunate side effect of making her come across as... well, somewhat self-centred. She's still a teenager, cut her some slack.
Cassie isn't all sincerity, seriousness and drama all the time though. On the surface, she does have a somewhat flippant and snarky side to her regular, every day dialogue. This is most often employed when she first meets people! Orrr when she feels put on the defensive. It's still who she is, but it's definitely an unconscious defense mechanism used to keep others at arm's length. See, her self esteem isn't too bad, but she grew up moving around from town to town her whole life for so long that she's had no sense of stability or permanence in her life. Everyone and everything she gets attached to is something that will eventually be taken away from her, so she tries hard to not let people in right away. It's possible that Cassie herself isn't even really aware of how lonely she really is. Her extreme loyalty and helper/meddler tendencies are the unconscious reflection of a girl who is actually desperate to cling on to the few friends she's managed to keep for herself.
Cassie also has a dark side-- quite literally. She was born with the ability to do dark magic, which in The Secret Circle world, is not so unlike the Dark Side Of The Force. It corrupts the user and feeds off negative emotions. Cassie has a complicated relationship with it. Her dark magic is absolutely something she fears. When she uses it in the moment, she feels all-powerful. And that's a dangerous thing, and easy to get addicted to. Not only that, but whenever she comes back to herself, she feels immediate regret and disgust over the way channeling her dark magic seems to override her moral sense of right and wrong-- something that's very important to Cassie. However... despite it's clearly inherently evil properties, her dark magic has also been used by her as a tool for salvation. Because of it, Cassie has managed to save her friends from certain death on a number of occasions when she otherwise would not have been able to. However, it becomes pretty clear that she doesn't have any control over her dark magic as time goes on-- rather, it has control over her. The more she uses it, the more she loses herself to it. The more powerful she is, the worse her rage is, the less control her good side has over the decisions she makes in the heat of the moment. Because of this, Cassie becomes increasingly frightened of herself and her powers and what she may or may not end up doing in the future.
However, it's also because of this dark side that Cassie is more trusting and forgiving than anyone else in the circle. She knows what it's like to feel driven by bloodlust, by revenge and desperation, to deeply regret actions taken in the heat of the moment. She understands being stuck between a rock and a hard place-- but when both options suck, she's a survivalist, not a moralist. Some people may think that death is preferable to succumbing to dark magic, but she never will. She will do anything to protect herself and those dear to her-- she has so few of them, after all. And it's because she understands all this that she's the first person to trust and forgive Jake-- a reformed witch hunter-- and later on, her father when he steps back into her life. She wants badly to believe that people can move forward and change, that they can be more than the sum of their parts (or magic), that good can coexist with evil. Because if not, then... what hope does she have?
